London

UK art market experts fear that new taxes on asset gains for overseas investments, coupled with a planned flat €40,400 levy for foreign residents domiciled in the UK for over seven years, will put pressure on London’s appeal as a centre for buying art. The tax reforms are scheduled for implementation in April.

London

On 4 March, Christie’s will be auctioning a fine eclectic collection of modern design furniture and decorative arts at its Modern Design sale. There could be some real bargains, such as this Carl-Erik Ekselius chair and ottoman, estimated at €800-1,100.

New York

After the €2.76m success of the first part of the Meriem Collection sale of Chinese snuff bottles in September 2007, on 19 March Christie’s is auctioning off the remaining 114 lots (total estimated at €1.6 to 2.2m).

Berlin

German auction house Irene Lehr Kunstauktionen astonished and delighted the German market with a discovery of an early work by Max Beckmann. Still-Life with Gladiolus, 1914, was offered with an estimate of €40,000, but sold to a Berlin buyer in October for €270,000 — a record for one of Beckman’s paintings from this period.
