UK art market experts fear that new taxes on
asset gains for overseas investments, coupled
with a planned flat €40,400 levy for foreign
residents domiciled in the UK for over seven
years, will put pressure on London’s appeal
as a centre for buying art. The tax reforms are
scheduled for implementation in April.

Berlin
German auction house Irene Lehr
Kunstauktionen astonished and delighted
the German market with a discovery of an
early work by Max Beckmann. Still-Life with
Gladiolus, 1914, was offered with an estimate
of €40,000, but sold to a Berlin buyer in
October for €270,000 — a record for one of
Beckman’s paintings from this period.
